EU Reg Would Ban Mercury in Sphygmomanometers
Citing the availability of safer alternatives, the European Commission is proposing a near-total ban on mercury measuring devices, beginning Aug. 1. The proposal, issued Jan. 13, would extend a 2007 ban on mercury-containing fever thermometers to sphygmomanometers (blood pressure gauges), strain gauges used with plethysmographs, and other professional and industrial devices.
