Devicemakers had their work cut out for them in 2012, with MDUFA reauthorization negotiations lingering into the summer and concluding with a comprehensive FDA reform package — the FDA Safety and Innovation Act. Device safety remained a major issue. In addition, many companies cut jobs and research budgets, or announced plans to do so, to free the funds needed to comply with the 2.3 percent medical device excise tax.
