Baxter to Create Biopharma Business, Open New R&D Center
Baxter International announced plans Monday to create a new global R&D center in Cambridge, Mass., for its emerging biopharma business, which the company will make a separate entity, known as Baxalta, in mid-2015.
Baxter said it expects to have roughly 400 R&D employees at the center, as well as biosimilar, oncology and business development teams. Those R&D employees are currently based in California and Europe, and they will relocate, Baxter said.
Baxalta will maintain some R&D operations in Vienna, Austria, and will have its global headquarters in northern Illinois, where Baxter is also based.
The company expects to open the first part of the leased, 200,000-square foot facility later this year. It will transition work to the new facility over the next two years to ensure continuity of current projects, the devicemaker said. — Kellen Owings
