UK’s NICE OKs Spinal Cord Stimulation for Chronic Neuropathic Pain

November 18, 2008

A new guidance by the UK’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) concludes that people living with chronic pain should have access to spinal cord stimulation, paving the way for National Health Service coverage of the treatment. The recommendation applies to people who continue to experience constant pain for at least six months despite attempts to alleviate the pain with conventional methods. NICE estimates that from 10 percent to more than 30 percent of people in the UK are living with chronic pain, depending on how the condition is defined.
