Congressional Democrats Call for Hearings on Hazardous Medical Devices

January 30, 2012
House Democrats are urging the Committee on Energy and Commerce to hold hearings on whether the FDA and device industry are doing all they can to protect consumers from unsafe products. In a Jan. 20 letter, Congressional representatives Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) and John Dingell (D-Mich.) asked Committee Chairmen Fred Upton (R-Mich.), Joseph Pitts (R-Pa.) and Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) to launch an investigation into the premarket review and subsequent marketing of two high-risk products — Lap-Band weight loss devices and urogynecologic surgical mesh. Pitts is chair of the committee’s health subcommittee and Stearns chairs the oversight and investigations subcommittee.
