Safety Risk of MoM Hips Continues to Confound FDA, Expert Advisors

Two days of public debate over the safety of metal-on-metal (MoM) implantable hip prostheses raised a host of questions, but few answers. Still, most panelists said they probably wouldn’t recommend MoM hips for patients, given their poor track record. The June 27-28 meeting of the FDA’s Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Devices Advisory Panel followed growing concerns, both within the agency and among healthcare providers, over high failure and adverse event rates associated with MoM hips.
