National Track and Trace Proposal Would Curtail State ePedigree Plans

November 2, 2012

A new bipartisan track and trace proposal floated by House and Senate lawmakers last week would implement a uniform national policy on drug product tracing, heading off state-by-state initiatives.

The new legislation, still in draft form, would be implemented in two phases, with unit-level serialization taking place first and unit-level tracking and authentication following at a later unspecified time, a provision that will please drugmakers concerned about having to comply with a patchwork of state laws.

California’s ePedigree law, set to take effect in 2015, is widely considered to be the strongest proposal to date, implementing simultaneous unit-level serialization, tracking and authentication.
