ACell Launches MatriStem Multilayer Wound Matrix Device in U.S.

ACell announced the U.S. launch of its MatriStem Multilayer Wound Matrix device for deep, hard-to-heal wounds. The device is one of a suite of porcine-derived extracellular matrix essential structures that use constructive tissue modeling to heal wounds and repair soft tissue.

The Multilayer Wound Matrix has two layers and a 1:1 mesh design that is easy to place over wounds extending down to tendon and bone, ACell spokeswoman Cory West told Device Daily Bulletin. The mesh, by virtue of its texture, is flexible and allows exudate to exit the wound, she added.

The device is comprised of naturally occurring urinary bladder matrix, which is a critical component of constructive tissue modeling, the company said. It has a two-year shelf life and can be stored at room temperature with no special handling requirements.

After the patient’s wound is cleaned, a physician removes the device from its packaging, cuts it slightly larger than the size of the wound, rehydrates it in room temperature saline solution or sterile lactated Ringer’s solution and then covers the wound.

The system is designed to manage partial- and full-thickness wounds, venous, diabetic, vascular and pressure ulcers, tunneled/undermined wounds, surgical or trauma wounds and draining wounds. It is contraindicated in third degree burns. — Lena Freund
