Advanced Bionics’ Neptune Cochlear Implant Gains Japanese Approval

Japan’s Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency has given a green light to sales of Advanced Bionics’ Neptune waterproof cochlear implant sound processor. The device is already available in the U.S. and EU.

The Neptune sound processor is lightweight and can be worn in the hair, on the arm, under a collar or in a pocket. It is also tamper-proof, so that children can’t disconnect it, the company said.

Cochlear implant wearers using the sound processor can hear in and out of the water. The device was developed for all weather, ages and lifestyles and can be submersed and used while swimming, according to the company.

Robert Gulock, vice president of Advanced Bionics Asia-Pacific, touted the device as the first swimmable CI processor available in Japan.

"Only AB's processors feature the AquaMic microphone that allows you to hear in water,” Gulock said. “Neptune can be used in the bath, for swimming and all sports.
