Argon Medical Acquires US Biopsy

September 10, 2014

Plano, Texas-based Argon Medical Devices has paid an undisclosed sum to acquire US Biopsy, a maker of soft-tissue biopsy products. The deal, announced Tuesday, gives Argon access to US Biopsy’s TLAB Transjugular liver biopsy instrument, making it one of just two companies competing in that market segment, according to Argon.

The TLAB ‘s technology allows the needle to flex while still functioning consistently — essential in transjugular liver biopsies, as the needle must bend to enter the hepatic vein and collect a sample, Argon says. The needle can also enter tough liver tissue without diving or deviating from the track, the company says.

Argon claims to be the only company to offer a full-core biopsy instrument used in percutaneous liver biopsies along with a device to collect liver samples through a transjugular approach.

The acquisition also nets Argon disposable and reusable soft-tissue biopsy instruments, breast localization needles and fine-needle aspiration needles. — Kellen Owings
