Hospira, Cerner Reach New Agreement to Advance IV-EMR Technology

Hospira and Cerner announced an expanded agreement to advance the integration of IV-EMR integration technology.

Under the agreement, Hospira will connect its smart infusion pumps to the electronic medical record at the point of care using Cerner’s CareAware iBus technology, which allows infusion pumps to be automatically programmed with pharmacy-validated prescriptions from the EMR and infusion therapy data from the pump to be automatically documented in the EMR, the companies said.

Hospira and Cerner initially partnered in 2003 to develop IV-EMR operability.

Hospira, headquartered in headquartered in Lake Forest, Ill., is a provider of injectable drugs and infusion technologies. Kansas City, Mo.-based Cerner develops health information technologies to connect people, information and systems around the world. — Michael Cipriano
