USC and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Develop Memory Loss Device

September 30, 2015

Researchers at the University of Southern California and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina have developed a brain prosthesis aimed at helping people who suffer from memory loss.

The prosthesis includes a small array of electrodes that are implanted into the brain. It is currently being evaluated in patients after performing well in laboratory testing in animals, the partners say.

Damage to the hippocampal section of the brain — the memory center — can result in the inability to form new memories. The prosthesis is designed to bypass the damaged region and provide the next region with the correctly translated memory.

The research, which could benefit wounded soldiers suffering from memory loss, was supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. — Michael Cipriano
