Doctors Without Borders Demands Pfizer and GSK Reduce Vaccine Costs

July 22, 2016

Doctors Without Borders is pressing Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline to cut the price of their pneumonia vaccines in an effort to treat vulnerable populations like the refugee children of Greece.

Pfizer and GSK are the sole producers of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, producing Prevenar 13 and Synflorix, respectively.

Doctors Without Borders complained that the price for the vaccine is $68 per dose, 20 times more than the lowest global price, a price only offered to the poorest countries via Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The organization has called on the companies to lower the price of the pneumonia vaccine to $5 per child, for all three doses.
