Bovie Medical Gains FDA Marketing Clearance for Its Cool-Coag Generator and Open Handpiece

March 27, 2017

Florida–based Bovie Medical has won marketing clearance from the FDA for its J-Plasma generator and handpiece that incorporate Cool-Coag technology.

J-Plasma is a plasma-based surgical device for cutting and coagulation. The device uses a helium ionization process to produce a stable, focused beam of ionized gas that provides surgeons with greater precision, minimal invasiveness and an absence of conductive currents through the patient during surgery.

The technology increases the precision of the device with minimal thermal spread, and combines standard monopolar coagulation and helium spray coagulation capabilities in one handpiece.

The device allows surgeons to switch to a monopolar or helium spray coagulation mode. — Cynthia Jessup
