Devicemakers Look to Hill for Tax Relief After High Court Upholds Healthcare Act
Industry vowed to redouble its fight for repeal of the medical device tax in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 5-4 vote upholding President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform law. The high court had been asked to decide the constitutionality of the individual mandate in the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA), which requires all Americans to obtain health insurance by 2014 or pay a fine. The court’s ruling to uphold the law and the individual mandate — on the grounds it amounts to a tax and Congress has the authority to impose taxes — was handed down Thursday.
