GAO Report Finds DME Prominent in Criminal Healthcare Fraud Cases
A recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on healthcare fraud shows a high prevalence of fraud and abuse in the durable medical equipment (DME) sector. But that may not reflect current reality, an official with one homecare trade group says. The report, which was posted on the GAO website last week, looks at 10,187 cases of civil or criminal fraud investigated by HHS in 2010. It found that 16 percent of subjects in criminal cases closed that year were DME suppliers — a number that is especially striking because DME costs made up less than 2 percent of total federal healthcare spending.
