Malaria Research Network Launched in Gambia
The Africa Media and Malaria Research Network (AMMREN), a consortium of scientists and journalists focused on fighting malaria, was recently launched at the National Nutrition Agency, Gambian newspaper Foroyaa reported.
Momodou Jasseh, a demographer and head of the Medical Research Council Farafenni field site, said AMMREN is collaborating with the University of Oxford and GlaxoSmithKline on the development and testing of RTS, S/ASO2A, a malaria vaccine.
Clinical trials have shown the vaccine gives 18 months’ protection to children. Further trials are being planned in Africa, Jasseh added.
