Data monitoring committees (DMCs) — distinct from trial sponsors, institutional review boards (IRBs) and other oversight bodies — are charged with conducting regular reviews of interim trial data to advise sponsors regarding the safety of subjects and the continuing validity and scientific merit of the trial.
