FDA Shoots Back at Congress: Agency Not Root Cause of Generic Shortages
The FDA is an important part of the solution to drug shortage crises — not a contributing factor, the agency is asserting in response to a congressional report that blamed its regulatory actions for limiting the manufacturing capacity of much-needed products. The June House Oversight Committee report said FDA regulatory activity has effectively shut down close to one-third of the manufacturing capacity at Bedford Laboratories, Sandoz, Teva Pharmaceuticals and Hospira — the country’s four largest producers of generic injectables, which are the products involved in most drug shortages.
