Motivation is the key, says human error reduction expert Ginette Collazo. Tap into employees’ self-interest and show them how compliance benefits them and, conversely, how cutting corners can hurt.
Your training also needs to cover the reasons behind the procedures, Collazo says. People break the rules because the rules don’t make sense to them or they don’t understand the consequences. The more information you give them about a task, the more importance they’ll attach to it and the better they’ll remember it and do it properly.
