The Department of Defense has approved Carestream Health’s Vue picture archiving and communications system for use in Navy medical facilities around the globe, making it the first company to successfully complete the Defense Information Assurance Certification and Accreditation Process, the Rochester, N.Y., company says.

Users can combine the readings of all medical imaging exams onto a single platform, helping to boost productivity while simplifying operations and support. The PACS can also register 3D images such as magnetic resonance and CT scans to help highlight small changes in anatomy and improve clinical collaboration.

PACS are used by hospitals, clinics and medical practices to store, manage and access patient medical images and information. The Vue PACS was tested at a large DoD hospital that performs more than 300,000 radiology exams a year. Its voice recognition and reporting features, which allow remote reading by radiologists, helping to speed delivery of reports and eliminate transcription costs, were also tested, the company said.

Carestream’s X-ray products and healthcare IT systems technology are already in use at U.S. Veterans Integrated Service Networks and Army and Air Force facilities. — Kellen Owings
