Psychiatrist to Serve 9-Month Sentence Over Drug Kickbacks
A psychiatrist who received nearly $600,000 in kickbacks from Teva Pharmaceuticals and its subsidiary Ivax Pharmaceuticals for prescribing an antipsychotic drug will spend nine months in federal prison, according to the Justice Department.
Dr. Michael Reinstein was sentenced last week in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois after pleading guilty to violating the Anti-kickback Statute, according to court records and a Justice Department release.
Reinstein admitted in February 2015 to prescribing the antipsychotic Clozaril and its generic equivalent to thousands of patients in exchange for lucrative consulting fees, all-expenses paid vacations and other gifts.
