Valeant Coughs Up $54 Million to Settle Kickback, Fraud Allegations
Valeant will pony up at least $54 million to settle Justice Department allegations that one of its subsidiaries paid kickbacks to convince physicians to prescribe more of its products.
Under the deal, Valeant will shell out $46.53 million to the federal government and earmark another $7.47 million to resolve state claims against subsidiary Salix Pharmaceuticals.
The Justice Department is contending that the company violated the federal Anti-Kickback Statute and False Claims Act by disguising payments to physicians as speaker programs between January 2009 and December 2013. Valeant purchased the company a year and a half later.
