GAO: Federal Agencies Need Performance-Based Measures to Judge Opioid Strategies

Numerous federal agencies have strategies to address illicit opioid use but almost all lack concrete goals and outcome-oriented performance measures, the Government Accountability Office said in a new report.

“Without specific outcome-oriented performance measures, federal agencies will not be able to truly assess whether their respective investments and efforts are helping them to limit the availability of and better respond to the synthetic opioid threat,” the report states.

The GAO also found that while the opioid crisis has led to increased collaboration among law enforcement agencies and public health agencies, institutions on both sides face problems with access to timely, accurate data.
