The FDA cleared Psychemedics’ fentanyl drug test, which uses a sample of the patient’s hair to detect use of the synthetic opioid.

The new test allows companies and educators “to quickly detect people at risk and take steps to deter usage,” the company said.

The CDC says drug overdose deaths involving fentanyl have increased by 1,000 percent between 2011 and 2016.
