Masimo’s ORi Shows Promise in Oxygen-Monitoring Study
Masimo’s ORi (oxygen reserve index) combined with standard-of-care oxygen saturation monitoring showed promise in guiding supplemental oxygenation during laparoscopic gastrectomy surgery, researchers in Seoul, South Korea reported in the journal Medicine.
Available outside the U.S. since 2014, ORi is a parameter intended to help deliver the correct amount of supplemental oxygen during general surgery to lower the risk of hyperoxemia, excessive blood oxygen which can affect internal organs.
The combined measurements helped reduce hyperoxemia compared to oxygen saturation monitoring alone, the researchers found.
ORi is still in the investigational phase and has not yet received FDA clearance.
