POST-OPERATIVE INSTILLATION OF INTRAVESICAL MITOMYCIN C IS SAFE
Recurrence rates following transurethral resection of
bladder tumors (TURBT) are significant. This can be due to reseeding of tumor
cells at the end of resection or the ability for new tumors to arise within the
bladder. Mitomycin C (MMC) intravesical chemotherapy can be placed via a Foley
catheter at the conclusion of the procedure. Following a dwell time of one hour
it is drained and the Foley catheter can be removed, if desired by the urologist.
This approach is known to decrease tumor recurrence rates.
