PATENT ISSUED FOR NEW DIABETES TREATMENT
Geron has received a patent for its production of insulin secreting cells from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs).
The patent covers a new method developed at Geron working toward the goal of producing pancreatic islet cells from hESCs to be used in new cell-based treatments for diabetes. In collaboration with researchers at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Geron's scientists have demonstrated that these cells generate human insulin when transplanted into animals and that this procedure extends the life of diabetic animals, according to the company.
