Data Shows Variances in the Use of Heart Treatments

November 7, 2007

New data demonstrate significant underutilization of many guideline-indicated lifesaving medical and device therapies.

In fact, the data show substantial variances in the use of all guideline-recommended treatments for heart failure patients, according to Medtronic.

According to the baseline results, the use of angiotensin II receptor blockers and beta-blockers was relatively high in eligible patients; however, fewer patients received other lifesaving treatments and devices for which they were eligible based on current medical guidelines.

These included cardiac resynchronization therapy, such as defibrillators and pacemaker devices (39 percent of eligible patients) and implantable cardioverter defibrillator therapy (51 percent of eligible patients).
