Uganda to Receive Abbott's Lower Strength Aluvia Tablet

December 3, 2007

Abbott has made its lower strength Aluvia tablet available to Ugandan children with HIV/AIDS.

Aluvia (lopinavir/ritonavir), which is known as Kaletra in developed countries, will be used to treat children who no longer respond to first-line HIV medicines.

Abbott shipped the medicine under a waiver order approved by the Ugandan government. Waiver orders allow medicines to be shipped before they are approved provided the government gives specific permission.

Abbott said it is working with African governments to expedite registration of Aluvia.
