Company Increases Prices for Excipients

December 14, 2007

BASF, a chemical manufacturer, increased prices for all of its pharmaceutical excipient products by up to 9 percent, as contracts allow. Higher energy, transportation and raw materials costs were cited as reasons for the price hikes.

The company told MQN that additional price adjustments depend on future market development and raw materials costs, which are still rising. Price increases for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) generally have not been instituted although prices for pharmaceutical caffeine were increased earlier this year.

Lonza, another chemical firm, said API prices have stabilized recently after years of declines since the 1990s. Although prices for Lonza’s APIs have leveled, allowing the company to enter into long-term supply contracts, it has noticed price increases from manufacturers in China as higher raw material costs take effect.
