Nigerian Court Orders Arrests in Pfizer Case

December 27, 2007

A Nigerian court issued arrest warrant on three Pfizer officials for their failure to appear after receiving a court summons in a criminal case brought by the Kano state government against the drug giant over the 1996 Trovan drug trial.

The presiding judge said the three were served with summons to appear before the court Nov. 6. He issued the warrant of arrest and adjourned the case to Jan. 29, 2008, according to Nigerian newspaper This Day.

The Kano state filed the suit against the drugmaker demanding $5 billion for alleged breach of fundamental human rights. Pfizer said it will appeal the arrest warrants.
