Breakthrough Technology May Revolutionize Tooth Decay Treatment

Quantum Dental Technologies has developed a technology prototype that detects and monitors the early onset of tooth decay without using dental X-rays.

The dental caries detection system, called the Canary system, uses a hand-held laser that emits a low-power light to examine tooth surfaces. By using a laser that interacts differently with healthy teeth than with decayed teeth, the system can identify areas of decay faster than other methods, according to the company.

The system is less invasive and safer than traditional approaches to detecting decay and does not require needles or fillings.
