Spinal Disc Technology a Step Closer to Patent

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a Notice of Allowance to Smart Disc for its artificial spinal disc technology patent.

The company’s spinal replacement disc mimics a patient’s own intervertebral disc and can be implanted via a posterior application, as opposed to the more invasive standard practice of going through the front of a patient.

By maintaining the disc space height between bones, the prosthesis supports normal movement between the vertebral bodies and prevents them from collapsing and damaging the nerve root, Smart Disc said.
