First U.S. Patient Undergoes Ultrasound Procedure to Relieve Pain

July 21, 2008

The first U.S. patient has been treated in InSightec’s pivotal trial of its noninvasive, radiation-free ExAblate Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) system to relieve pain for patients with bone metastases who have failed an initial round of palliative radiation.

The ExAblate system uses MRI to visualize a patient’s anatomy. It then aims focused ultrasound waves at the targeted tissue to thermally destroy it. The MRI allows a physician to monitor and continuously adjust the treatment in real time.

The company said it hopes to enroll more patients in the study, which is being conducted at 15 sites across the U.S.
