FDA Approves ATryn, First Drug From Genetically Engineered Animals

The FDA approved GTC Biotherapeutics and Ovation Pharmaceuticals’ ATryn, the first therapeutic protein from genetically altered animals and the first recombinant antithrombin approved in the U.S. ATryn (antithrombin) is indicated for the prevention of peri-operative and peri-partum thromboembolic events in patients with a hereditary deficiency of antithrombin, the companies say. The treatment is the first recombinant antithrombin product approved in the world.
