Organization Issues Alert on Warmers

February 19, 2009
ECRI Institute has concluded that a hospital nursery fire was caused by a defect in an infant radiant warmer and has issued a high priority medical alert for the devices. The organization is recommending that the bassinet warmers, made by Borning and Hill-Rom, be removed from use. The fire occurred after a hot particle fell from the device’s heater-element assembly above its bassinet into oxygen-enriched materials near an infant’s head, according to the institute. The units were last manufactured in 1998. The line was purchased but not sold by Draeger in 2004.
