Stricter Testing Standards Urged for Contact Lenses

February 27, 2009
Testing for contact lenses and cleaning solutions could become more stringent after the FDA revises its guidance for the products.

A panel of experts met with FDA officials at a public workshop last month to discuss stricter standards for contact lens test methods to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of certain products.

During the workshop, participants agreed on testing parameters and new criteria for disinfection efficacy test methods they will urge the FDA to adopt. Guidance revisions could include changes in labeling, no-rub policies and premarket testing requirements, according to the American Optometric Association (AOA), which co-sponsored the workshop.
