Baucus Bill Could Result in Loss of Device Jobs

Cutbacks in jobs and R&D could hit the device industry if Sen. Max Baucus’ (D-Mont.) healthcare overhaul legislation becomes law, industry officials say. Baucus’ bill, America’s Healthy Future Act, calls for devicemakers to pay the Treasury secretary a total of $4 billion annually with fees based on companies’ market share. “Taxing medical technology will cost jobs, siphon resources from essential medical research and drive up the cost of health care for all Americans,” AdvaMed President and CEO Stephen Ubl says in a statement.
