FDA Clears Tooth Decay Detector

December 17, 2009
The CarieScan Pro, a handheld device to detect and monitor tooth decay, has received 510(k) clearance. The device includes a hand piece and disposable sensor that is held against the tooth being examined for about four seconds. It measures the presence of tooth decay earlier than other devices and is more than 90 percent accurate in detecting sound and carious teeth, according to 3D Diagnostic Imaging. CarieScan is a subsidiary of 3D.
