Shuren: CDRH Is Looking for Ways to Deal With Staffing Shortage

CDRH is taking steps to deal with a staffing shortage that’s increasing device review times, delaying guidances and limiting access to regulatory
officials. “I don’t have a bench,” CDRH Director Jeffrey Shuren said at the 2010 Food and Drug Law Institute annual conference. “My
ranks are thin … and our workload is going up.” To deal with the shortage, CDRH is relying more on external experts to help review increasingly
technologically advanced 510(k) and PMA submissions, he said.
