Study: Growing Trial Complexity Raises Costs, Hurts Enrollment

May 18, 2010
The growing complexity of clinical trials is making it difficult to recruit patients while increasing the cost of developing new drugs, according to a study by the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development (CSDD). In conducting the study, Ken Getz, a CSDD senior research fellow, observed wide differences in complexity and execution burden based on the phase of the trial and the therapeutic area being addressed. For instance, between 2002 and 2007, Phase II and IV trials experienced the greatest relative growth in complexity and execution burden.
