CMS Reconsiders Coverage of PET Scans for Tumors

Despite recent concerns about radiation dosages, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is proposing to loosen its restrictions on the number of positron emission tomography (PET) scans it will cover as part of the initial treatment of solid tumors and myeloma. Currently, CMS reimburses for one PET scan, which uses a radioactive tracer, as part of the initial treatment strategy. Using the scan, a physician can clarify the tumor stage and avoid unnecessary treatment.
