Proposed Conflict-of-Interest Rule Could Stifle Necessary Research

September 7, 2010
NIH’s proposal to lower the monetary disclosure threshold to reduce conflicts of interest in clinical research has sparked a flurry of comments from researchers who think the threshold is too low and does not account for investigators who move between institutions. The proposal would affect investigators’ willingness to participate in research, could prove harmful to translational medicine, could adversely impact nonprofits and would hurt continuing medical education, the Association of Clinical Researchers and Educators says in a comment on the rule, which would cut the annual threshold to $5,000 in aggregate income — including that of the researcher, spouse and dependent children.
