IOM: Incentives Needed to Spur Device R&D for Rare Diseases

Sponsors developing devices to treat rare diseases and other unmet health needs should be offered incentives, such as tax credits and NIH grants, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) says in a new report. Other incentives could include additional orphan products grants and the creation of inducement prizes for the design and initial testing of novel devices in areas of unmet need.
