GAO: FDA Foreign Inspections on the Rise, but Behind Domestic Ones

FDA inspections of foreign plants have increased in recent years but still pale in comparison with the level of inspections made on U.S.-based manufacturing facilities, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has found. After identifying weaknesses in the FDA’s foreign drug inspection program from fiscal years 2002 to 2007, the GAO recommended in 2008 that the FDA “increase inspections of foreign drug establishments and improve information it receives to manage the foreign drug inspection program,” according to the report, which adds that drugs manufactured in more than 100 countries are sold in the U.S.
