Lawmaker: How Much Is Too Much When It Comes to Consultant Pay?

Findings from an ongoing Senate inquiry into clinical trial practices have led Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) to ask FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg if there are financial interests that the FDA would consider too significant for a clinical investigator to be involved in a study. Grassley wrote the Oct. 22 letter after his staff found that almost all of the 50 clinical investigators developing products for Medtronic received significant payments.
