November 12, 2010
A major international offensive against online sellers of counterfeit and illicit medicines has resulted in the seizure of more than one million pills with an estimated value of $2.6 million.

Code-named Operation Pangea III, the initiative involved 45 countries and is the largest internet-based enforcement action of its kind to date. The action was coordinated by a number of international organizations, including the World Customs Organization (WCO).

In all, 694 websites were investigated and 290 were closed down, the WCO said. In addition, 328 postal hubs were monitored, leading to the inspection of 267,855 packages and confiscation of 19,916 found to contain illegal or counterfeit drugs.
