‘Ageism’ Alleged by Former FDA Media Relations Staff

December 7, 2010
In a recent shakeup in the FDA’s public affairs offices, five health industry veterans had their employment with the agency terminated or were demoted after a new associate commissioner forced them out — allegedly to make room for younger, cheaper employees. Ira Allen, Elaine Gansz Bobo and Dick Thompson were hired as FDA media relations staff less than a year ago. Each new hire brought years of industry experience to the organization, sources said. However, toward the end of their first year, all three professionals say they were terminated by the FDA.
