Senator’s Letter to Hamburg Highlights Ongoing Drug Supply Shortages

December 9, 2010
Concern for cancer patients who are losing access to important chemotherapy treatments due to shortages led Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) to write to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, urging the FDA to “find an immediate solution to the shortage of chemotherapy drugs, and to address the long-term challenges facing our nation’s drug supply.” One cause of the shortages is that relatively few companies manufacture chemotherapy drugs. If those companies have shortages, the drugs are not readily available. Warnings of drug shortages have been around since earlier this year.
